Definition of Beam Angle

- Half angle: 50% light intensity, (FWHM)
- Full angle: 90% light intensity
- For Curve A, B, and C half angle 30°
- Full angle
- Curve A = 80°
- Curve B = 60°
- Curve C = 50°
- Full angle definition is more accurate as it
allows the luminaries designer to
arrange/ develop their LED lamp.

Reflector or Secondary Optics?
• Reflector:
Can't shift the light direction as there is no reflective
surface. Take figure1 for example, the angle is 25°
(area A) but the total beam cover area is about 40°.
The light in area B sometimes is useless (depends on
application) and this does not make the best use of
the light/ flux which generated by LED.
• Lens
With the total internal reflection, even the light will
drop 8~10% when goes through the plastic, the
control of the beam is better than reflector.
